Tall, dependable, beautiful. Perfect descriptions for both this darling dresser and my dear friend, Kerstin. It seemed appropriate to name the dresser for her!

Of course, "super star" knobs were the only thing that would fit!

I wanted this dresser to have a lot of depth and interest.  There are four colors plus a dark wax over everything.

I added more brown to the drawers than the body of the dresser for additional interest and some contrast.

I just love how she turned out!

Cara's Dresser

This was a commission piece, which I just fell in love with!  Cara looked through my portfolio, told me which pieces she liked, and what colors she wanted and this was the result.  Isn't it beautiful?

The drawers are painted in my favorite white, BEHR's Magnolia Blossom.  Then lightly distressed and finished off with a very slightly tinted wax.

The body and the knobs are a teal color that was probably the prettiest oops color I've ever picked up.  I had a gallon of it, but when that's gone I'll likely have to go have it color matched I love it so much.

On the two small top drawers I used some classic glass knobs.  

The top was stripped and stained with a single application of Minwax's Dark Walnut, which showed up lighter than normal on this piece, but I liked it.  Of course I finished it off with some tinted wax and gave it a good buffing to get that aged gleam we all love so much.

I love it when someone sees one of my pieces and proclaims it "just exactly what I've been looking for!"

That happened twice last weekend at my last show of the year (thank goodness!)

Since I'm busy recuperating from a flu/cold double whammy, two HUGE shows, and trying to get this family in the Christmas spirit, I thought I'd show them to you together.

The first is this cute chest of basket drawers.  It actually went to live in our cute local fabric store, 3 Layer Quilts to store their scraps.  Perfect, right?

The second is this vintage office chair.  Everything about this chair was still perfect.  Its wheels still rolled smoothly, its turning mechanisms still worked, it just needed a little help in the looks department.  A nice couple knew it would go perfectly at their solid old roll top desk.

I have three other pieces ready to show you, plus pictures from the last two shows, so I'll be back sooner than later.

Wyatt - A masculine dresser

It isn't often that one of my pieces feels masculine to me, but this dresser speaks to me like a proud and trail worn cowboy.

Instead of distressing this piece with a sander, I used a paint scraper and scraped away the parts I wanted gone.

This piece came to me with the top and the sides all ready sanded down most of the way.  I smoothed them out a bit more and used Minwax's Provincial to stain them.

The knobs are reminiscent of wagon wheels.  Perfect!

Athena

I occasionally have a man (yes, always a man) wander in and lament the painting of wood furniture *GASP*!!!!  I had one such visitor at the last show I did.  I have my ways of dealing with them (I'm nice, despite the fact that they obviously aren't going to buy anything.)  This particular man, however, saw this dresser and decided that he liked this one.  He described it as "post-apocalyptic."  Well, I'm not sure that is actually a design style, I could be wrong.

Anyhow, in his honor, I am naming this dresser Athena, goddess of war, wisdom and the crafts.  Seems appropriate, don't you think? 

She has good strong bones, as solid as they come.  If any dresser was going to survive an apocalyptic war, it would be her.

This finish is an example of one of the few times I've used an existing finish as part of my finish.  The cream color is the color she was originally stained.

She was then coated in blue, perhaps that was her uniform?

The graphite?  Well, any warrior worth her salt is bound to pick up some soot, right?

Her knobs and legs are painted the same graphite color.

I love how this finish turned out.  As a true goddess, she would look right at home in a variety of settings.

Phoebe's Dresser

I love Seattle.  They have the BEST yard sales.  I wasn't even LOOKING!

This is what I found. . .

Isn't she horrible?  Actually, she is incredibly beautiful. The bottoms of the drawers are made of bird's eye maple.  It's been a long time since furniture was made with such care and quality workmanship.  She was pretty beat up, though.

I sanded down the drawer fronts and the top.  Notice the second drawer down, though.  It had a thick wood veneer in three panels over the drawer front with the grain of the wood going in the opposite direction of the other drawers.  When I stained it it looked strange, so I needed a new solution.

I painted the top and bottom of the drawer the same color as the body of the dresser, then I used piece of sheet metal grating (not sure what's it's intended function was) as a stencil on top of the stain on the middle panel. 

The panels were divided by a thin rounded piece of wood that was originally painted gold.  I painted them red- like furniture racing stripes!  

The knobs were off of a dresser I refinished last year.  I always hang on to old knobs, and here's a good example of why!  A little extra red jewelry to match her racing stripes!

Just a bit of distressing and a top coat of dark wax gives the pale gray paint a bit of age, interest, and protection.

This little girl is in the running for my favorite furniture revival of all time. 

 

 

And I'm rarely organized enough to have a side by side before and after, but since I'm playing favorites anyway!
